Hi Tom & the Consulting Forum,

I am from a NZ university, have good grades and a well-rounded CV. However, after applying to the “Big Three” in Aus I have noticed that word on the web seems to be that those not from “big name” universities will find it very hard to get noticed through a global recruitment site. The consensus seems to be that networking is the only way to get an interview in this situation.

What are your thoughts on this?

And, with regard to networking, how would you recommend getting in touch with the right people, either in Australia or NZ?

Any advice appreciated!

Hi Mon,

Welcome to the Consulting Forum!

There is a lot of competition for positions in top consulting firms, so having the “big name university” brand name obviously helps in getting yourself an interview.

Here are my slightly more detailed thoughts:

In a previous forum post I summarised 7 key qualities that consulting firms are looking for (click here).

After taking a look at that list, your response might be, I have all of those qualities! Why did I not get an interview?! Good question…

Top consulting firms receive thousands of applications each year, and there are lots of people who would make excellent consultants who will miss out on interviews. What the consulting firms are looking for is a “distinguishing feature”, something which makes you stand out from the crowd.

One distinguishing feature would be to have a “big name university” brand name on your CV. This is by no means the only distinguishing feature which can get you in the door.

I’d be interested to hear from other members what kind of distinguishing features you believe can open the door to consulting firm interviews…
